  1. Vancouver is a close 2nd

    We’re taking the wheel and driving off road for this B-Side and talking about… VANCOUVER!

    If you find yourself wanting to get off the rock, here are three must-visit spots for live music and a ‘chill’ every Islander will be down with…

    1. The Cambie
      300 Cambie St.
      Maybe the reason we’re so drawn to this spot is because we have Cambie pubs in Esquimalt and in Nanaimo, or maybe it’s because it has that punk-rock vibe, that “no care” attitude and great music. This company has been around since 1897 and continues to support local products in Vancouver and across Canada.

    2. Guilt & Co
      1 Alexander St
      This little venue is tucked underneath Chill Winston in Gastown. The dim lighting, exposed beams and foundation, and gender neutral washroom make it a warm and welcoming space, yet still feels like it’s a speakeasy you’ve stumbled upon and is too good to be true. There’s live music every night of the week and the bands all have killer talent. Doors usually open at 8pm and they have a “pay what you can” policy, with all proceeds paying the band. Get there early if you want to get in. This spot is highly recommended! Check out their unique website design on desktop too.

    3. The Shameful Tiki Room
      4362 Main St
      Boss man Dan Gunn was so captivated by this place he spent 4 hours there and hasn’t stopped talking about it since! It was their 4th anniversary when he visited so the tiki-ness was in full effect. The decor is spot-on with cozy booths, bamboo and palm trees and very creative cocktail drinks. There were even Polynesian dancers, a host that looked like Freddy Mercury and music that makes you want to stay all night. There’s a location in Toronto as well. You’ve gotta visit this place!

  2. Out with the Old, in with the New-ish

    Victoria is well known for having an abundance of food and drink establishments, and as of recent there’s quite the shift taking place around town… Out with the old, in with the new-ish.

    NEW-ISH SPOTS:

    1. El Furniture Warehouse
      Opening at 533 Yates St. soon
      This premium dive bar has been a hit in Vancouver for over a decade. With 6 locations in Vancouver and 1 in Whistler, it’s obvious that patrons dig the $4.95 food menu, cheap drinks and the vibe of that dive bar decor. It will be opening up in the old Reef Caribbean food location any day now. While we personally think of a dive bar as a watering hole that’s been around for years, has spotty plumbing and that feeling you might get into a brawl at any minute… we’ll still give this place a chance! Located by Lucky Bar and across from Famous Originals pizza.
    2. The Ruby – Downtown
      Opening at 642 Johnson St. today
      Located inside the Best Western on Johnson St., “The Ruby” will be opening their second location in what was “The London Tube” and “De Dutch” years before that. This is fantastic news for all of us who have attempted to grab a table at their Hotel Zed spot (when you do get one, it’s like winning the lottery). They’ll be serving up great dishes and spinning vinyl at their grand opening today 10am to 3pm.

     

    IN RECENT NEWS:

    1. The Pig = Middle Eastern?
      1325 Blanshard St. (The Atrium)
      We all learned recently that the Pig Joint will be closing in a few short days on March 26th for good. Owner, Jeff Hetherington, is taking on a new adventure on a farm and is selling the Pig food truck (branding, menus and all) for $100k. What will fill the Atrium’s prime corner location is rumoured to be a Middle Eastern restaurant run by the owners of Tacofino. We’re all waiting in anticipation to find out!
    2. Jones Bar-B-Que
      725 Cook St.
      For those of you that are now crying in your leftover BBQ sauce, cheer up, we still have a great, messy, BBQ spot to dine at. Owners of The Ruby opened up Jones Bar-B-Que just last year on Cook St. in the old pierogi shop. The authentic Texan style BBQ, mixed with it’s larger menu options, decor, branding and great music has made this spot a hit. Don’t wait too late to have dinner as they often sell out!
    3. Meat & Bread = no more
      The popular Vancouver franchise, Meat & Bread, was expected to be a hit in Victoria. It has recently closed up shop, rumoured to be due to it’s limited menu, and there’s no word yet what will be moving into it’s spot. If you’re craving some meat and carbs, try local “Roast” in the Hudson market.

  3. Kano’s “Free Rider”

    Kano is a Video Game company that was established in 2008 in Victoria. In the near decade they’ve been around, they’ve created games like Mob Wars, Viking Clan, Pirate Clan, Zombie Slayer, Free Rider and much more.

    They started our creating Facebook games, moved on to desktop and on March 8th Free Rider 3 moves to iOS! Free Rider is a difficult and VERY addictive game with a stickman riding a bike. It has millions of plays a day and has a billion plays in total!
