  1. Squirrealism

    The best explanation of Carollyne Yardley’s artwork may come directly from the artist herself:

    “I am a storyteller at heart, and my work is based on imaginary, characters, misfits and alienation. Or perhaps, an alien nation. I am currently exploring character development through portraiture. The squirrel face is a metaphor for the secrets we keep.”

    “We tend to identify people or businesses based on their brand, or outward appearance. By removing the human face, the viewer is forced to contemplate the personality of the entity within, using only the clothing as a uniform and visual cue. For instance, people will speculate they think one of my characters is a boy or a girl, regardless of clothing or hairstyle accoutrements.”

    Born & raised in Victoria, British Columbia, Carollyne completed her Bachelor of arts at the University of Victoria.

    Many Tectorians may remember Carollyne from her days running the local web development firm Star Global up until her career as an artist starting to take flight. We like her work so much we recently added four of her prints to the lounge at Accelerate Tectoria.

  2. Victoria Beer Week

    Victoria Beer Week is a nine-day series of events highlighting a broad selection of BC craft breweries while educating Victorians about craft beer. The week will kick off with a Cask Night on March 1 at the Victoria Public Market and close with a Brewmaster’s Brunch at the Atrium on March 9.

    Tastings, seminars, movies and micro-events will be happening at various venues throughout the week.  With over 30 breweries participating, you will want to check out the full schedule here and get your tickets now.

    Aiming to educate and build “beer ambassadors”, the Victoria Beer Week Society is a non-profit organization whose mission is to facilitate various beer-related events at locations around Greater Victoria.

    A stunning island off the Canadian West Coast that produces amazing local beer?  Yup, that’s something we’ll cheers to.

  3. Current Swell's latest offering is gritty and smooth

    Victoria born & bread rockers, Current Swell have spent the last few months in studio laying down new music for their upcoming 5th album (still untitled). This week, the band released the first single off the album, “Rollin”.

    Front man Scott Stanton leads the charge on a heavy slide guitar and bandmates Dave Lang, Ghosty Boy and Chris Petersen hold down the song’s driving, upbeat tempo.

    The band credits much of their success to their fans, particularly the online community. Their song Young and Able (2009) became an Internet hit through its popularization on YouTube. The Internet has contributed significantly to the Canadian west coast band’s large following in South America, particularly Brazil, where it headlined in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo in 2012.

    Current Swell has opened for bands like The Beach Boys, Xavier Rudd, Dispatch, Bedouin Soundclash and The Beautiful Girls, and has made appearances at the 2010 Winter Olympics and the Ottawa Blues Festival.

    In 2011, Current Swell placed first at Vancouver’s Peak Performance Project, winning the $100,500 top prize. The band also played one the largest concerts of its kind in Victoria at a Canada Day concert for 45,000 people at the B.C. Legislature.
